There are several vitamins and minerals that are going to be important for your child to have enough of. These include, especially, iron, which is needed in children to prevent anemia. Young and adolescent girls are also at a risk of having an iron deficiency.

Another important thing that children need is calcium. This is something that is completely necessary for healthy bones and teeth. If children are drinking milk and eating dairy products, they are probably getting enough calcium, but if they aren’t, you might need to supplement this in their diets.

It is also important that children are getting fluoride. This helps to build healthy teeth. However, it is important that they only get enough fluoride, and not too much, so don’t add to their intake unless your dentist or doctor thinks that you should.

If you don’t think that your child is getting enough vitamins or minerals, you should consult with your doctor to make sure that you can find a good balance and a good children’s multivitamin for them to be taking.

Chidren And Exercise


If you have a child of 6 to 8 years old that wants
to start exercising and lifting weights, you may
find yourself wondering what you should do. While
some think it is perfectly fine for children to
exercise, there are others that think differently.

The long and short of it is that yes, it is
beneficial for your child to partake in exercise
or a weight training regimen although there are a
few things that you should keep in mind once this
starts to happen.

No matter how you look at it, children aren’t
minature adults and therefore you can’t use the
same methods with growing children that you can use
with adults, as children are different from adults
emotionally, anatomically, and physiologically.

All children have immature skeletons, as their
bones don’t mature until they get 14 – 22 years of
age. With girls, exercise during childhood can
have very critical effects on bone health that
can last for their entire lives.

Children are often times vulnerable to growth
related overuse injuries such as Osgood schlatter
disease. Children have immature temperature
regulation systems due to their having a large
surface area compared to their muscle mass which
will cause them to be more susceptible to injury
when they aren’t properly warmed up.

Children don’t sweat as much as adults do, so
they will be more susceptible to heat exhaustion
as well as a heat stroke. Due to their low muscle
mass and immature hormone system, it makes it
harder for them to develop strength and speed.
Their breathing and heart response during
exercise are also different from an adults, which
will affect their capacity for exercise.

On the other hand, young boys and girls can
drastically improve their strength with weight
training although opposed to adults, neurological
factors instead of muscle growth factors are mostly
responsible.

When you consider programs for children, first and
foremost you should obtain a medical clearance.
The first approach to designing a program is to
establish a repetition range of 8 – 12 and keep
the work load appropriate for the range.

You should ensure that workouts are spread out
enough to have at least 1 – 2 full days of rest
between workouts. The main focus when working out
should be on the form of every exercise performed,
and not on the amount of weight being lifted.

Before weight training, warm up and stretching
should be done. Start your children off with light
loads and then make adjustments accordingly. No
more than 3 non consecutive exercise sessions
should be done in a week. You should also see to
it that they drink plenty of water before, during,
and after exercise. Getting enough water is very
important with exercise, as it is often times very
easy to get dehydrated – especially with children.

Weight Watchers: One Of America’s Favorite Diets


For forty five years, only one diet has earned the right to brag about its success. What is it about Weight Watchers that has made it one of the most popular diets out there?

For starters, Weight Watchers is easy to follow if you are committed to doing the program. There are now two options for you to chose from. The first one is the flex plan where instead of counting calories, counting fat, or even counting carbs, you are counting points. Each food serving you eat is worth a point based on their fat and dietary fiber amounts. Depending on your weight you will have a set number of points to eat each day. You can still eat your favorite foods as long as you count the points. The flex plan is all about portion control. They have also been doing a no counting plan called the core plan. It is a little more restrictive than the flex plan. The core plan has a food list to follow. These foods are low in energy density and they make you feel more satisfied. These are the only foods you should be eating and you can eat however much you want. The core plans goal is to also teach you about recognizing the signs of when you are full so that you do not over eat. With the core, you still get 35 points a week to use, so you can “cheat” and not feel guilty about it.

The freedom with Weight Watchers is what makes it so appealing to so many people. They are not that restrictive with their food choices as some other diets like Atkins is. Granted the core does have a list of foods to avoid, that plan still gives you the opportunity to indulge if you should ever feel the urge. You will not lose weight as fast as you would though on Atkins or other low carbs diets, but your chances of keeping the weight off is greater on Weight Watchers than a low carb diet.

Weight Watchers also believes in a good support system when losing weight and changing your lifestyle. That is why they offer weekly meetings for their customers. Most people have seen that if they attend meetings they tend to lose 10% more weight than those that go at it alone. The secret to the meetings is that the leaders have all been Weight Watcher dieters and are willing to share their struggles and victories so that everyone knows they are not alone.

High Fructose Corn Syrup: Is it Killing You?

There has been much debate lately about High Fructose
Corn Syrup. The scientists say that it may be unhealthy
for you and make you fat. Where as a manufacturer for
HFCS says that is not true. Well, here are the facts as
we know them right now.

Archer Daniels Midland, a company that makes HFCS,
which is the main ingredient used in sodas, ketchup,
barbecue sauce, cereals, snack foods and other
processed foods says that HFCS does not make you fat.

Health officials and many scientists have conducted
studies that show that HFCS may lead to fat
accumulation, obesity and other health problems.

What they have been finding is that HFCS readily turns
to fat in the body more so than conventional sugar. It
is also associated with higher triglycerides and LDL
(bad cholesterol).

What I think is even more important to take note of is
that HFCS appears to affect your appetite so that you
eat more food. It is important to note that this
finding isn’t just for HFCS. It also applies to
artificial sweeteners. Researchers have noticed this
occurrence with diet sodas that contain artificial
sweeteners.

The reason is because insulin levels do not seem to
increase when consuming HFCS and artificial sweeteners.
This then means that leptin another hormone which is
controlled by insulin does not get released either.
Leptin tells your brain when you are full and to stop
eating. Without this message you tend to keep eating
until you have eaten too many calories.

So what this means is that HFCS may not directly make
you fat because of the ingredients, but because you do
not get the message that you are full you tend to
overeat which results in weight gain and a higher risk
for obesity.

Your take home message is to avoid all foods that
contain High Fructose Corn Syrup. Go through your
cabinets and look at the labels of all your foods and
get rid of any foods that contain HFCS. Then the next
time you are shopping make sure to choose foods that do
NOT contain High Fructose Corn Syrup.

High Fructose Corn Syrup doesn’t make you fat by
itself, but it most definitely assists with weight gain
by increasing your calories consumed. Since we tend to
eat many processed foods that contain HFCS our chances
of overeating is greatly increased.

Here is a tip to reduce the consumption of HFCS
successfully. Replace one food item a week with a non-
HFCS product. Better yet replace that food item with a
fruit or vegetable. This one little change can have you
losing weight before you know it and living a healthier
life as well.

The Straight Dope On Food & Exercise


Q: I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is that true?
A:
Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it. Everything wears out eventually, speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that’s like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A:
You must grasp logical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism for delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable slop.

Q: Is beer or wine bad for me?
A:
Look, it goes to the earlier point about fruits and vegetables. As we all know, scientests devide everything in the world into three categories: animal, vegetable and mineral. We all know that beer and wine are not animal, and they are not on the periodic table of elements: so that only leaves one thing, right? My advice: Have a berger and a beer and enjoy your liquid vegetables.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise Program?

Can’t think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is “No Pain – No Pain”.

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A:
Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

The Zone Diet- How Does It Compare to Atkins.


Years back, whenever someone lost a lot of weight fast, the question they usually got from people was “Were you in the Zone or was it Atkins?” Both of these diets started generating press roughly around the same time and both were equally controversial.

The Zone was Dr. Barry Sear’s revolutionary diet. With the Zone diet you need to follow a 1-2-3 method to lose weight. This means that for ever gram of good fat you eat, you have to eat twice as many grams of protein and three times that amount of grams in carbs. For example females are expected to consume ten grams of fat, twenty grams of protein and thirty grams of carbohydrates at each meal. The 1-2-3 method is designed to turn on your metabolism and keep you full.

While it is considered a low carb lifestyle like Atkins is, both plans are very different. The Zone diet allows you to have carbs but it must be good carbs and it is only 140 grams a day. With Atkins you will wind up eating at least 50 grams of carbs once you are in the final stages of the program. When you are on the Zone you do not have any phases that you need to complete as you do on Atkins.

The biggest pro about the Zone diet when compared to Atkins is that it is not as restrictive as Atkins is. While some nutritionists argue that Zone diet is poor in calories and will not be able to ever really feel satisfied, others say that the balanced meals included in the plan promotes moderation and that each meal will bring you into a state of mind where your body can perform to its peak level.

Atkins can be very restrictive the first two weeks and needs vitamins and mineral supplements. When people prolong the induction phase of Atkins it can be harmful to the kidneys and the colon. Though once you move on in Atkins most people report an increase of energy while losing weight on Atkins.

Both Atkins and the Zone are suppose to be a new way of life and not a quick fix to your weight problem, though a lot of people report that it is hard to follow either program for their entire life, the Zone is a little more manageable to follow for a longer time and the chances of keep the weight off is greater with Zone than it is with Atkins.
